Where
we stand:
An
end to the war and occupation in Iraq. We will not join any further
imperialist wars.
An end to all privatisation and the return to public ownership of
the railways and other public services.
An education system that is not dependent on the ability to pay, that
is comprehensive and gives an equal chance in life to every child
no matter how wealthy or poor their parents, from nursery to university.
A publicly owned and funded, democratically controlled NHS, free to
all users.
Pensions linked to average earnings.
Raising the minimum wage to the EU Decency threshold of £7.40
an hour.
Tax the rich to fund welfare and to close the growing gap between
the poor and the wealthy few.
The repeal of the Tory anti-union laws.
Opposition to all forms of discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity,
beliefs (religious or secular), sexual orientation, disabilities or
national origin.
The right to self-determination of every individual in relation to
their religious (or secular) beliefs, and sexual choices.
The defence of the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
Opposition to the European Union's 'Fortress Europe' policies. We
will strongly oppose the anti-European xenophobic right wing in any
Euro referendum. We oppose the 'stability pact' the EU imposes on
those who join the euro. This pact would outlaw government deficit
spending and reinforce the drive to deregulate the economy. We will
therefore vote 'No' in any referendum on this issue.
Support for the people of Palestine and opposition to the apartheid
system that oppresses them.
An end to the destruction of the environment by states and corporations
for whom profit is more important. |

KAY PHILLIPS
Cheetham Ward, Manchester City Council
all online material promoted by Paul
Kelly on behalf of Kay Phillips
“I
am delighted to have been selected as Respect’s prospective
candidate. I believe that we have been let down by the Labour
government due to their pursuit of conservative policies.
“Whilst
our children have become more pressured and stressed, schools
are forced to focus on targets and testing. Leisure and sports
facilities for children and young people are woefully inadequate."
“Whilst
our housing is more expensive and overcrowded, privatisation
and speculative building has meant expensive new flats in
our city centre lie empty. Social housing is less available
and waiting lists are longer."

Britain
is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet the gap
between rich and poor has widened under New Labour.
In Cheetham Hill we don't have enough community spaces; sports
facilities; green spaces; refuse collections or cheap reliable
public transport.
We don't have enough good quality, affordable housing. House
and flat prices have soared over recent years because of the
shortage of new homes - and speculation by buy-to-let landlords.
Now, as the ‘credit crunch’ bites, thousands fear
losing their homes as mortgage repossessions are set to rise.
Yet New Labour raises tax on the low paid while handing out
billions to bail out the failed bankers of Northern Rock?
Manchester’s speculative flat building ‘boom’
as left thousands without access to doctors or dentists. The
council should insist these services are provided before giving
planning permission for new developments.
All three of the main parties wish to sell off more of our public
services and spaces to private companies. The result is services
run for profit rather than the needs of local communities.
Respect is proud to defend council housing, to oppose the sell
off of our health, education and social services and to campaign
for decent well paid jobs.
The enormous amount of money spent fighting illegal wars abroad
- £3,000 million last year alone - should have been spent
investing in public services at home.
Everyone's quality of life in Manchester could and should be
a lot better. The means putting people before profit, peace
before war. |
